The Marcie Chapa Project was born out of a Latin jazz workshop performance that brought together a uniquely talented group of musicians. Inspired by the chemistry, skill, and creative energy of the ensemble, Marcie Chapa recognized the potential for something greater. What began as a one-time collaboration evolved into a dynamic and ongoing musical journey. The name reflects both the project’s roots and Marcie’s vision — a collective brought to life through passion, purpose, and the power of rhythm.
Marcie Chapa is a world-renowned percussionist with a deep passion for music and arts education. A founding member of Beyoncé’s all-female band, Marcie has also performed with Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, J Lo, Jill Scott, Al Jarreau, Kanye West, and Mary J. Blige. She’s graced major stages including the Grammys and the Oprah Winfrey Show. Based in Monterey, she leads the Marcie Chapa Project and serves as band director at Salinas High School. Marcie also mentors youth through workshops and retreats, using music as a tool for empowerment and healing.
Brian Sheu is a versatile guitarist from San Jose, known for his work with the Huney Knuckles, Super Soul Bros., and iLLiance. A sought-after sideman, he has performed with top artists including Patrick Bartley Jr., Alan Ferber, and Jazz Mafia, and brings an eclectic sound rooted in groove, soul, and jazz fusion.
John Nava, a Monterey County conguero, began his musical journey at six and later founded the Latin Jazz Collective. A Marine veteran, John channels his rich musical heritage into dynamic performances across the region.
Ryan Trujillo is a leading Bay Area bassist and jazz educator, with degrees in jazz studies from San Jose State University. Known for his expressive playing and deep groove, Ryan has performed with both local and international artists for over a decade.
Barry Capiaux is a Salinas-born saxophonist and woodwind specialist. With a jazz foundation and a flair for innovation, he’s played across genres, from jazz to reggae/dancehall, performing at major festivals like Reggae on the River and Sierra Nevada World Music Festival.
Kevin McCullough, an award-winning pianist and arranger, performs across genres including jazz, salsa, funk, and Afro-Cuban jazz. He has toured internationally, performed at renowned festivals, and serves as pianist and music director for the Latin Jazz Collective. His compositions and arrangements have reached audiences across the U.S., U.K., and Costa Rica.
