For MJF69, we present the our first “Monterey Surprise.” The theme is “Throwback to ’58” with soon-to-be-announced artists that will recall our inaugural festival.
Monterey Jazz Festival’s opening weekend in October of 1958 featured a who’s who of jazz — Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday (in her only performance at Monterey), Dave Brubeck, Sonny Rollins, Cal Tjader, and many others. In this — our inaugural “Monterey Surprise” showcase — we harken back to that storied opening weekend, featuring some of our favorite contemporary artists performing that 1950s repertoire together for the first time. Since we’re not disclosing who’s performing, the “Monterey Surprise” is truly an “only in Monterey” experience.
